What is a muffler anyway?

Your muffler is part of your exhaust system. In tip-top condition, your muffler reduces noise from your engine [unless you install a performance muffler] and controls backpressure created by engine valves. Your muffler also plays a big role in overall vehicle performance.

Tip 1: Know when to change your muffler.

You have a problem Houston, if your muffler has rusty holes or loose parts. Signs that you need to change your muffler include your engine sounding louder than usual, low fuel efficiency, condensation in the exhaust pipes, and bad smells. Mufflers have a mechanical lifespan and wear out over time with normal driving. Winter driving is hard on your muffler because it is exposed on the underside of your vehicle and susceptible to damage from potholes, ice and snow, so be sure to check your muffler often in rough road conditions. Driving with a hole in your muffler can be dangerous because exhaust fumes can leak into your vehicle’s interior, exposing you to carbon monoxide – an odourless, colourless poisonous gas.

Tip 2: When A Tip About Mufflers Becomes A Tip [and when to use one]

Muffler tips are also called exhaust tips or extensions and they are used to add horsepower (in the right application) and style. They are the only part on your exhaust system that extends into plain sight and can be bought in various sizes, shapes and finished for any vehicle. If muffler tips are on your shopping list, choose from dual exhaust tips, black exhaust tips, round, oval, rectangular, oblong, trumpet or split oval. If all this choice is just too much to think about, give us a call to discuss your options and which muffler tip works best for your vehicle.
