Tips on proper car maintenance

Cars are a major investment. No one wants to spend so much to buy a car and only have it around for a few years! Maintaining your car properly is essential to keeping it in good condition for a very long time. It can also ensure your safety, the safety of your passengers, and the safety of other drivers on the road. Most car owners don’t do their own maintenance, but it is useful to understand what’s involved.

Always read the owner’s manual

This is one of the most important parts of owning a car and maintaining it well. The owner’s manual will help you understand the many features in your car and how they work, what to check and how often, and signs to look out for that might mean bringing it into the shop. The owner’s manual will help you understand that there’s no “one size fits all’ prescription when it comes to vehicles – every model is different. Keep the manual handy in your glove box just in case one of those pesky warning lights goes on!

Regularly inspect and maintain your tires

Ensure you know the manufacturer’s recommended pressure for your tires and keep at this level at all times. This will help reduce the wear on the tires. Look at your tires and check that the tread hasn’t worn down. During a regular maintenance check-up, any tire issues will be identified.

The value in warning light indicators

In most cars, there are usually warning lights to indicate if there is an issue that requires immediate attention. It can be as simple as a regular oil replacement. It is one thing to notice these light indicators and it is another thing to understand what they mean. This is why reading the owner’s manual is very important. Some examples of warning lights include the Automatic Braking System (ABS) warning light, and the Check Engine light. If you schedule maintenance check-ups on the schedule recommended in your manual, you hopefully won’t see these lights turn on!
